This crispy tofu bacon is salty, smokey and is great on the side for breakfast or in a sandwich. It is best if it is marinated overnight so it does take some planning but it is easy to throw together and then let it marinate in the refrigerator.
It can be difficult to cut the tofu thin but having a variety of thicknesses is always good. I have tried to slice it with a mandolin and it did not go well, I don’t recommend it. Just do your best with a large knife and if some pieces of tofu are thicker than others it will still be tasty!
If I am only using half a block of tofu I will often marinate it in a loaf pan but if I would like bacon leftover I’ll use the entire block and marinate it in an 8 x 8 baking dish. To save on dishes mix all of the marinade ingredients together in the pan and then add the bacon. Once or twice while the tofu is marinating very gently flip the tofu over.
Our favourite method to cook the tofu is in the air fryer. It does need to be done in batches so it can take some time if the whole package of tofu is being made. Make sure that it is laid out in a single layer and spritzed with a small amount of oil.
The tofu can also be cooked in a frying pan with a bit of oil. Depending on how big your frying pan is it may take a few batches to be cooked this way as well because if the pan is crowded the tofu won’t crisp up as easily.
We love this crispy tofu bacon on BLT sandwiches or on the side of waffles or pancakes, maybe dipped in some maple syrup? I’ll even send some to school for lunches.
